About

My academic career began at University College London, where I studied geography and history. Having experienced 'swinging' London of the 1960s up close and personal, I migrated north to Middlesex University, where the rest of my professional career has unfolded. The first part of that career was located in a Geography department where, amongst other things, I started to develop what has become a long-term interest in the spatial applications of computer technology. During that time, I was also involved in several national research projects exploring good practice in teaching and learning.

The second part of my career (since 1997) has been at Middlesex University Business School, where I took up residence in what is now the Marketing Department. To my pleasant surprise, I found a great deal of compatiblity between geography and marketing.

I currently teach and research various aspects of geodemographics, GIS, and data visualization, I have devised and run a Masters programme in Electronic Business, and I have helped to spearhead the adoption of Web technology across the School. I have recently been involved in designing modules in Personal and Professional Development, and Marketing Intelligence.

On the research front, I have been exploring the role of 3D visualization technologies in the geosciences and, with my son (who is a computer games designer in the USA), I have built VR software that permits 3D navigation around Victorian London. Earlier this year, I began a research project on applicable learning in the University curriculum, and joined a team in the Interaction Design Centre (in our School of Engineering & Information Science) that is exploring the role of advanced 3D computer graphics for air-traffic control applications.
